Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams dipped from winning the opening set to losing her third round clash with sixth seed Petra Kvitova in Centre Court on Friday.

The 264th ranked Czech dealt with the Americans serves to seal a 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win, through to the fourth round, where she has booked a duel with Chinas Shuai Peng.

The 24-year-old struck 48 winners to Williams 25, after his serves troubled the five-time champion.

Petra Kvitova Outlasts Venus Williams in a Three-Set Battle In Centre Court.

It was a tough battle, said 2011 champion, Kvitova. I know that Venus can play unbelievably on the grass. I am just happy that I am through.

When I lost the first set I was down mentally but I knew I could come back and then anything can happen in the third. I am feeling well, I love to play on grass. I have great memories of Wimbledon, but every match is tough.

Williams clinched the first set after Kvitova gave up three break and set points, fluffing a backhand wide to concede the set.

But after forcing the second set into a tie-break, Kvitova raced ahead of Venus, who at set point double-faulted on her own serves to surrender the set.

The Czech looked more and more terrific on her service games and after racing ahead early into the decider she avoided the dangers of offering another break point at 4-4, slipping a fine top-spinning angled winner past Williams.

She then turned her anger on Venus serves to close out the contest which lasted for two-and-a-half hour.

Chelsea will attempt to land top Manchester United target Paul Pogba this summer, by offering the Frenchman the most lucrative contract in their history.

Despite having secured a deal for former Arsenal captain Francesc Fabregas earlier this month, one which places him in the top bracket of earners at Stamford Bridge on an estimated £180,000-a-week, Jose Mourinho is reportedly desperate to land Pogba before the start of next season as he wants to pair him with January addition Nemanja Matic.

Now Goal.com is claiming that Roman Abramovich will consent to breaking the bank by way of consenting to the young Frenchman being offered even more than Fabregas, meaning he’s prepared tomake Pogba Chelsea’s highest earner.

Pogba’s ability Much has been made over Pogba’s ascension to the summit of the footballing pyramid since his move toJuventus, but for once none of it is the product of fans overestimating a player. The 21-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s best midfielders this season, and his influence in the middle of the park has been of great benefit to both Juventus and France.

Capable of operating in a deep position protecting the back four or alternatively further up the pitch as support for the attacking units, there really isn’t much Pogba hasn’t excelled at since United allowed him to leave the club back in 2012.

Interest from United

What makes any potential deal all the more interesting is the fact that United are clamouring to re-sign the man they once waved goodbye to. Recent speculation infers that Louis van Gaal has placed Pogba amongst his most desired targets for the summer, and that the Red Devils would be ready andwilling to pay the mooted £60million it would take for Juve to consider letting him leave Italy.{GMS}

Maria Sharapova sailed into the fourth round of Wimbledon with a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 win over American Alison Riske on Centre Court on Saturday.

Riske, rated 44th in the world, broke the fifth seed in the opening game to move 3-1 up, but the Russian broke back to level and took over the initiative to close out the match winning the last 11 games in a row.

The 2004 champion next faces the winner of Angelique Kerber and Kirsten Flipkens.

I felt better as the match went on. Alison is a great grass court player so I knew it was going to be a challenge today, said Sharapova.

Im very happy to be in the second week and giving myself another chance at this tournament.

Top seed Serena Williams failed to witness the second week of the 2014 championship. It is the first time in nine years that Williams have been knocked out so early, and only the third time in 15 visits to Wimbledon.

The five-time champion lost 1-6 6-3 6-4 to Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.

A few years ago I couldnt even play on grass now Ive beaten Serena Williams. I cannot believe it, said Cornet, who has now defeated the American twice this season.

But Cornet raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set, with Williams leading in numbers of unforced errors- 9 to nill from the world number 24.

Cornets failed to serve out the set at 5-1; sending a forehand into the tramlines at 30-30 to hand back two breaks before digging dip to take it 6-3 at the second attempt.

Cornet did well on the Williams second serve early into the third set and moved to within two point of victory on serve at 5-2.

Williams tried a fight-back with a break of serve, but two games later a wayward forehand and a poor volley gave the Frenchwoman match point, and Williams steered his backhand into the net to hand off the tie.

Chiellini Bite Not Deliberate, I Lost My Balance- Suarez

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on June 28, 2014

Uruguays striker Luis Suarez says he did not deliberately bite Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

World footballs governing body Fifa imposed a four months ban and nine international matches suspension on the 27-year-old for biting Chiellini during their final group match on Tuesday, 24 June, 2014.

The Liverpool striker outlined his defence in Spanish in a letter dated June 25, one day before an independent disciplinary committee passed their final verdict, stating he lost his balance in the tangle with the defender.

Suarez Says He Lost His Balance In World Cup Bite Incident.

In no way it happened how you have described, as a bite or intent to bite, Suarez wrote.

After the impact I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent. At that moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth.

However, the seven-man Fifa panel judged the players action as deliberate, intentional and without provocation.

Uruguay has in the meantime lodged their intention to appeal and have until Sunday to submit a full written appeal document.

Suarez has now returned to his homeland and missed his countrys second round match against Colombia on Saturday.

Fans gathered outside his home to show their support and the player has thanked them for being there for him.

He tweeted: Hello everyone. Im writing this message to say thank you to everybody for the support and affection Ive been receiving. My family and I are very grateful for it.

Many thanks for being by my side and I want everyone to support my teammates today in the game against Colombia.

Yobo Fancies Eagles Chances Against France

Posted by: Omaku Cephas on June 28, 2014

Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo insists the pressure is on 1998 champions France in Mondays second round match in Brasilia.

The Super Eagles claimed the only previous meeting between both nations- at full international level- by a lone goal in a friendly played in Saint Etienne in 2009.

However, judging by both teams rating and the reviews theyve each earned on conclusion of the group stages of the World Cup, Yobo believes Nigeria can cause the major upset of the tournament.

Joseph Yobo Says Nigeria Will Do Well Against France.

We will do our best to win, but we have nothing to lose, the Fenerbahce of Turkey defender said. Many have not given us a chance, but we will do it.

Les Bleus have scored four more goals than the African champions- two from set-pieces- after three rounds of matches and have also tried more shots at goal than Nigeria- 39 as against the 26 shots the Eagles have directed on target in Brazil.

Rated 27 places behind the former European champions, Nigeria has defended well than their opponent so far in the tournament, winning 15 tackles as against the 7 managed by Didier Deschamps side and has recovered more balls as well.

On the face-off between Hugo Lloris and Vincent Enyeama, an early goal could do fifth-timers, Nigeria, lot good, bearing the fact that the reigning best African export in the French Ligue 1 has put up 17 saves (nine of those which came against Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina); 11 more than the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper.

Yobo, who finally clocks his century if selected against France on Monday, remains Bullish about Nigerias chances.

We are here at the highest stage of football to do our best. We did well against Argentina, one of the tournament favourites, and we can do better against France in the next round, the ex-Olympique Marseilles defender added.
